Pramila Patten: The Genocide in Rwanda & Sexual Violence

As we commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide, Pramila Patten, UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, reflects on the atrocities committed against the Tutsi population. Despite the horrors, progress was made in the pursuit of justice. The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) formally recognized these events as genocide, marking the first time that rape and sexual violence as integral components of genocide and may amount to crimes against humanity.
This clip is from the seminar “30 Years After the Genocide in Rwanda: Gender, Accountability and Atrocity Prevention”, arranged by HL-senteret, the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) and the Centre for Gender Research at UiO (STK) on 6th June 2024.
